Remembering Borders

(Sign Installation at the German Federal Highway B 208) 2009

Mellila 2007

The work merges the memory of the former inner German border with that of the current EU border.

1. Directly next to a sign recalling the federal state boundary between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein at the former inner German border is a second sign that is recognizable as a quotation of the original, but which shifts its contents at the same time. The map is enlarged by part of the African continent and by incorporating the course of the borders forming Europe’s outer limits.

2. At the Church of Schönberg, where the “Schönberger Musiksommer” event takes place, a display panel has been installed which keeps track of the number of those who have died at the European borders. The numbers are constantly updated. Source: fortress europe (http://fortresseurope.blogspot.com)
